Facebook status of the Day - 6 October 2012

As we drove to Wellington yesterday afternoon, we listened to RadioLive. And we heard John Tamihere (clearly on the comeback trail, despite earlier denials) ranting about those "scumbag Aussie banks" ripping off New Zealanders, whilst lauding Russel Norman for having brought the issue out into the open.

The irony of all that was not lost on us. Nor was it lost on the bloke in the booth producing Wille and JT's show, who posted this on Facebook:

Fair dues cobber; that's a bonzer response!

Nice one, KS, attack the man not the message. The big four Aussie banks are the most profitable in the world

having made 20% more profit than most other banks. For Westpac their NZ wing is the most profitable and most of our governments banking is done with them. Despite this NZ taxpayers had to spend millions in legal action against Westpac and the other Aussie banks to claw back $2 billion in deliberate tax avoidance. Westpac alone had to pay back almost $1 billion in avoided tax.

The four CEOs of the NZ banks earned a total of $15.3 million last year, three times more than Maritime NZ's total budget.

Consumer NZ has written numerous articles about unnecessary bank charges that are just ripping off customers in blatant profiteering.

And yet when Russel Norman questions bank profits, you respond with a criticism of his accent...oh dear.

I wasnt defending the banks in my status update, just saying that it's hard to take him seriously on the subject with an Aussie accent.

Ha ha. Kevin "John the Jew" Campbell liked it as well. Obviously we can add Aussies to the list of people he is suspicious of.

"just saying that it's hard to take him seriously on the subject with an Aussie accent."

Right on. There should be a list of topics that people with certain accents shouldn't be able to talk about without attracting ridicule. For obvious reasons, how to win cricket matches should be on the New Zealand list.

Aussie owned? I own a slice of NAB. Or has someone moved the Hutt Valley across the ditch overnight? In fact there are about 20,000 New Zealanders who own NAB shares.

The only reason our banks are owned by Australian ones is that we don't save enough to own the large NZ companies.

Sitting around and moaning won't change that - all those who don't like overseas ownership of New Zealand companies need to put their money where their mouths are.

We ought be proud to have access to Oz banks in NZ. They are strong and well managed. I contribute to two super schemes both of which are operated by Oz banks. I am therefore a modest part-owner of Oz banks and happy to be so.

Cadwallader.

Oh lighten up bsprout. It wasn't me that posted on FB and I've no idea how it reproduced itself on my blog.
Why do you blame me???

Jeremy Parkinson thinks Australians can't be taken seriously when talking about Australian things (the banks for example) so it follows that financial-whizz John Key can't be taken seriously when he talks about financial matters, don't it?

I heard put of the interview, what stuck in my mind was Russel Norman was saying the money shouldn't be going off-shore but should be retained in NZ for "the productive sector of the economy" but haven't the Greens been opposed to mining, farming and any oil development so theres only manufacturing left and thats in a depressed state. Hypocritical or what?

Key is not seen as someone 'who is normally straight with voters.' That he has often been a stranger to the truth and has refined the dirty art of 'truthiness' has long been plain to many.

The difference now is that the scales are falling from the eyes of many more. Key conceals the truth, Key fudges the truth, Key manipulates the truth, Key often blatant porkies. What is truly scary is that Key is not alone among the NATZ in his practice of the black political arts - Joyce's cronyism, Bennett's distortions, Parata's arrogance and bumbling, English's rorting, Brownlee's ineptitude, Bank's political amnesia - where does it end?

Governments can only govern successfully when the electorate as a whole feel that they are governing in the interests of all, that they are observing minimum standards of honesty and transparency and even-handedness. Those are not qualities and values I associate with the NATZ regime.

If a National Election were held today this New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll says a combined opposition of Labour/ Greens & New Zealand First would be favoured to form a new Government.

It's what's being said, no denying it!

I would be tempted to vote for one of the minor parties just for the sheer entertainment of them trying to govern, tearing themselves apart in the process. Imagine "the Veto Party" in a position where they had to be positive and make decisions for progress. Ooh, it is making me feel all naughty thinking about voting for them. Harawira in the mix too. bring it on, I am thinking. Cunliffe, Peters, Mahuta, Hughes, Fenton, Harawira, Mathers, Sepuloni, Genter, Wall, Shearer, Moroney. Tears of laughter running down my cheeks. Woo hoo!
