Photo of the Day - 15 October 2012

There's only one candidate for this today:

Congratulations to Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner for his triple world record this morning; the jump was the fastest, farthest free fall from the highest-ever manned balloon.Baumgartner is the first human to exceed the speed of sound without some form of mechanical assitance.

Quite why people do things like this we don't understand. But Felix Baumgartner has writ his name in history, and good on him.

Felix Baumgartner's Skyfall is the best promotion of a Bond film ever.

Felix Baumgartner and those like him push the boundaries of humanity. There were those who thought the sound barrier wouldn't be broken, those who thought space exploration would be too dangerous, even those who thought Columbus would fall off the edge of the world.

Without people like them, we'd all be in a valley in Africa never wondering what was over the hills in the next valley.
