The Whale goes global

We blogged yesterday about Cameron Slater's appointment as editor of Truth newspaper. Now the story of the Whale's entry into mainstream media has gone global; Roy Greenslade from The Guardian reports:

Blogger hired to edit print newspaper

A New Zealand blogger has landed a mainstream print media editorship. Cameron Slater, who writes a blog called Whale Oil Beef Hooked, has become the editor of Truth, a weekly tabloid newspaper.
Regarded as "scandal mongering" and "scurrilious", the paper carries Page 3 girl pictures and salacious stories.
Slater, who is no stranger to controversy himself, says he plans to shift the emphasis to more hard news and opinion pitched at the "working bloke" and written in a "blunt and forthright manner".
His Whaleoil blog is far more popular than the online version of Truth, which sells about 10,000 copies per issue in print.
Slater – the son of a former National Party president, John Slater – has been fined for breaching name suppression orders in a series of cases involving high profile defendants.
But he has a wide following and has pledged to transform Truth with an injection of his own irreverent style. He says: "No bastard wants to read old news – they can get that online. We'll be more of a views-paper that promises to deliver REAL news, REAL opinion.
"The people are numb from the eyes down with the diet of PR'd crap they get now. I will not do it to them anymore – it's not right."

Well done Whale; the story of his elevation certainly has news value. And the concept of the Truth becoming a views-paper is an interesting one; one we will watch with interest.

Not everyone is cheering Slater's appointment though. Labour MP and self-described communications expert said on Twitter that she "feels slightly ill" at the news, whilst over at The Standard, Lprent has been as churlish as one might expect given that the Standardistas are miffed that both Whaleoil and Kiwiblog regularly out-rank them by some distance on the Open Parachute rankings.

And the first comment on the Standard thread is from Martyn Bradbury and reads thus:

I’ve resigned and so has Ross Meurant

That prompted a response on Twitter from quick-witted Listener columnist Jane Clifton:

Given that not much more than a year ago Cameron Slater was in the depths of serious and debilitating clinical depression, he has done remarkably well. His output at Whaleoil, whether you agree with the content or not is prolific, and he is like a dog with a bone; as we noted yesterday if anyone has the sheer bloody-mindedness to make the Truth a half-decent rag again it is Cameron Slater. If he rarks up the political Left in the process, that's simply an added bonus!

So where are all the defamation suits then Poles Apart? I haven't seen any reports of Slater being sued because he told fibs...

Your ongoing support for Slater is gratingly at odds with your Christianity, but you fail to see it. Your admiration for him is a stain on your soul and reflects aspects of your character that might otherwise remain hidden, so I guess Slater does all your readers a favour.

Spare us Bradbury's faux outrage and hate speech Norwood.

@ Ciaron - yep; he made a pretty significant mistake. He's not the first person to do that, nor will he be the last. He's made his peace with his wife and with God, and they're really the only ones whose business it is.

If there's no defamation suit, there was no lie - is that it, KS.
The John Key/John Banks guide to morality. Got it.

"He's made his peace with God" Slater's a Christian???OMG!

So ethics has no place in journalism now? Anything goes as long as it attacks the left. Sad indeed!

Keeping Stock said...

@ bsprout - Slater will actually have more accountability now than he does as a blogger; have you ever heard of the Press Council?

It will be an interesting ride alright.

Variety is the spice of life, and at the very least Cam's appointment provides that.

We have been listenng and reading outrageous comments from the left of the sphere without much recourse or balance for quite a few years now, the left have come to believe that their view and take on life, is the only one to be reported, & listened to.

A bit like an entitlement mind set really.

Now there may be a bit of balance, like it or lump it.

Slater - balance!

More accountability? Why would that be important? There have been no defamation suits have there? Slater's a good, honest Christian. There have been no defamation suits.

Just reading the goats post, and I must say I chuckled, as I can see where he/she is coming from for sure.

Balance is a matter of tribalism and perspective in politics I suppose.

I got the roflmfao bit..he.. but what does STC denote ????

STC = Scaring The Cat

Scaring the cat.

We of the Gruff Tribe don't believe that balance means having a bad person on board, just because there is a good one. Seems, you of the lofty height, do. That's queer.

Keeping Stock said...

Well look at that; they say you learn something every day, and today I have. Very good!

Key is lying again, this time about Afghanistan. Will Cam expose the PM in the Truth? Key is a stranger to the truth, which will complicate matters, but for the sake of balance, Cam should go gangbusters on John Key and reveal all of the lies he's been telling! Exciting times!

Ciaron said...

Sorry KS, IMHO if he can lie like that to his wife & kids, he has no business trying to hold anyone else to account.

Lofty said...

Hey Gruffy senior I did say

Now there MAY be a bit of balance, like it or lump it.

Got it, MAY.

I am not convinced Cam is a bad person just because you say it.

Mirrors have a way of putting others actions into persspective Gruffy....1st stone and all that.

Steady on Medusa; Ciaron raised a valid point. Few of us haven't made mistakes, and Cam Slater has to live with his.
