Now the Hurricanes were written off before this morning's match with the in-form Cheetahs, especially after the thrashing that the 'Canes endured last weekend in Pretoria. The match was played at altitude in Bloemfontein.
That the Hurricanes won is good news and a great turnaround. But they also scored four tries to pick up a much needed bonus point. And it was only a last-gasp penalty goal from replacement Cheetahs five-eighth Elgar Watts that enabled the home team, which was sitting second in the South African conference, to snatch a bonus point for finishing within seven points of the Hurricanes, having trailed the visitors by 20 points with ten minutes to play.
This was a gutsy performance by the Hurricanes, but more importantly, it was a well deserved victory, keeping alive a faint chance of a play-off berth. Whoever wrote the headline for the Stuff/Dominion-Post story suggesting that they had snuck by the Cheetahs has done the team an injustice.
